There are two systems of stone sizes called pp and ss. The older one -pp, stands for pearl plate. When jewelers sorted pearls by the size they would use a system of stacked up plates with holes (starting with big holes on top with smaller and smaller holes in the bottom). Pearls would fall through to the point where they would be too big to fall to the next level. At the end the jeweler would get the same size of pearls in each pearl plate. Later jewelers would use ss (stone size) for larger sizes. Both pp and ss are actually ranges of sizes, not an exact size. Check out our sizing conversion chart showing both pp and ss sizes as well as millimeter range.
